Note from the author: An entry for a contest. I think it makes a good story, all on its own. I rather like it.
She fingered the clothespin in her pocket nervously as she looked around. Here and there were other students, but all wore a badge of rank, classifying them as apprentice mages, at least, and some even wore the journeyman badge. She didn’t have a badge of any sort. She only wore the green clothes of the mage class. As she rubbed her thumb along the clothespin she always kept with her, a strain of music reached her ears, and she whirled about, searching out the source. It was a young boy, clad in green, but also without a badge of rank. His must be music-magic, while hers was clothing-magic. And he must be here to be tested, too. As she moved forward with the crowd, the boy stepped closer and said, “It’s an honor to meet you, Clara. Good luck.” Then he was gone, before she could reply.
